Rescue Me ID: 14-08-19-00076Duke (male)
Duke made a very lucky move on a Sunday morning. He wandered into the yard of one of DCHS' s foster moms. She could see right away that he was in desperate need of immediate medical treatment. He had a deeply embedded collar that had grown into his neck and caused a ring of raw flesh & infection. The pain had to be excruciating. [You can check out the photos on Facebook, but *warning* they are disturbing.] Thankfully, a vet from AMC was able to meet the foster mom and a DCHS volunteer and perform emergency treatment that morning, removing the collar, cleaning the wound and administering antibiotic -- and to Dukes great relief -- pain meds. Despite his ordeal, Duke is friendly and affectionate. He loves being with people. We can only imagine the pain he suffered or how he escaped his torturous environment. But like so many of our residents, he seems to have forgiven the humans who neglected him. Once happy and cared for, he lives in the moment and cherishes his new life. However, now rescued, Duke becomes upset when people leave. His greatest fear is being left alone. In his past, being left meant unthinkable neglect and suffering. And so, he tends to bark - his way of pleading 'Is anybody there? Are you leaving? Are you coming back?'. For this reason, Duke would not be a good apt dog! But for the person who is home a lot with the time to teach him that he is OK and wont be abandoned again, Duke will be an adoring and faithful companion. On his first day with us, he barked desperately. Noting his distress, one of our volunteers went into Duke's kennel to just sit with him. He immediately stopped barking and laid his grateful head in her lap - calm, happy and feeling safe Apply: www.duboiscountyhumane.org/apply.html (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-07-23-00777Teddy (male)
Teddy is an outside dog and is very lovable. He was born without a paw, but this does not slow him down much. He loves to sit in a small pool and enjoy summer. His only fault is that he hates cats and will act on this.

Rescue Me ID: 14-06-28-00573Samantha (female)
Samantha is a good natured, loving, but timid dog. She enjoys social interaction and is very loving with people she is comfortable with she would gladly spend all day curled up next to you if she could. She does have a submissive personality which lends to being hesitant when it comes to learning new ideas or concepts requiring some extra work when teaching her new things. Despite this she does enjoy being outside and playing hard. One of her favorite things is to play with water out of the hose and run after sticks or any other thing you can throw for her. The current animals she lives with is another dog and 2 cats and she gets along well with the dog and is fine with the cats she's just not the biggest fan of them going around her food she pays real close attention to that. She hasn't had a lot of exposure to many other people and due to her hesitant nature it can make her a little fearful at first of new people but with a little coaxing she will meet new people and can be fine with interacting or playing with them after a little time. As far as kids she's only been around a few younger teenagers so I'm not exactly sure how she would be with kids she may be a bit hesitant with kids especially if they're high energy kids so that may be a bit rough for her to deal with at first but slightly older or calmer kids should be fine. Her shots are up to date through this summer. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-06-28-00565Hagi (female)
Hagi is a good natured loving dog. Her biggest joy is just having someone to play with her which can sometimes come across as being a little needy but with some attention she is fine. She also enjoys being outside with people and running around especially if you have a stick for her she's never figured out the whole return the stick part but she still loves chasing after things. She can be slightly stubborn when it comes to listening but she is also very intelligent and can pick up on new concepts and ideas with only a little work. The current animals she lives with is another dog and 2 cats and she gets along well with the dog and is very curious about the cats and likes to follow them. She hasn't had a lot of exposure to many other people so she can be a bit apprehensive at first but her curiosity always gets the best of her and she'll meet and let new people interact with her. As far as kids she's only been around a few younger teenagers so I'm not exactly sure how she would be with kids but based on the way she likes to play with adults I think she should be okay with kids. Her shots are up to date through this summer. (Less)
